The San Diego Coalition for the Homeless
Coupon Project

SDCH - Coupon Project - 1996

The San Diego Coalition for the homeless.

I volunteered full time and introduced a coupon project where the homeless could sell coupon books to passers by and earn for themselves a small income.
The center could get support by selling advertising in the book.
This would also pay for the printing.

The money donated was not allocated to the coupon book expenses.

I had to go back to computer consulting as the center closed down and appropriated all my resources, furniture and computers which I had moved to the center while I was volunteering there.

This experience taught me a tough lesson about corruption and deception in NGOs.

Some cases of Snapple were donated and mislabeled as ‘juice’ because it was not allowed to be distributed to the homeless.

The center closed. It appears to be reopened and under new management now and much better organized.
